One of the unique problems with the restoration of the various series of the Sunbeam Alpine is a timing chain cover front oil seal leak in the 1725cc series V (five, 5) engine. Rootes chose to ignore the ubiquitous lip seal in favor of the alignment sensitive Archimedes spiral, o-ring, oil slinger arrangement present on the Alpine. Over the course of time, the rubber o-ring deteriorates and the surface and the grooves of the spiral become damaged resulting in oil leaks in the front seal. The rebuilder is faced with trying to repair this area of the vibration damper and aligning the cover bore to the crankshaft with a now unobtainable alignment tool.

Many restorers have resorted to the adaptation of a Small Block Chevrolet timing cover seal. This is accomplished by cutting apart a SBC timing cover in the seal area, cutting away the seal area of the Alpine timing cover, aligning the two in relation to the Alpine crank / vibration damper and welding/brazing/gluing the Chevy part to the Alpine part. A shaft repair sleeve is then fitted to the spiral area of the vibration damper for the seal to bear against.

The Joes Restoration Rescue timing chain cover works with the original Sunbeam Alpine vibration damper with the Small Block Chevy shaft repair sleeve, or aftermarket vibration dampers incorporating the Chevy shoulder pattern.
It also adds a nice dress-up touch to the engine, being offered in natural finish which can be polished, or in black anodize with the Sunbeam Lion engraved on the cam sprocket boss.

Technical Details

The Joes Restoration Rescue Alpine timing cover is manufactured from 6061-T6 aluminum on our modern CNC machining centers. Each cover is inspected for critical dimensions using our state-of-the-art inspection equipment.

Prototype items were tested using Mr. Cero's personal Series Five Alpine employing both the original vibration damper with a repair sleeve and an aftermarket vibration damper with the SBC shoulder modification.
